Leo Mason: Award-winning sports and dance photographer.

Leo Mason is a specialist in sport and dance photography. During his 40 year career, he has captured some of the world’s most iconic sporting moments, as well as the most celebrated dancers and ballerinas. Watch him below in conversation with Eamonn McCabe.

BIOGRAPHY

Leo Mason began his career as an Art Director in advertising, before moving into photography where he chose to specialise in sport, often using innovative ideas and new techniques which would establish him as one of the World’s leading photographers. 

Over a 40 year career, Mason has contributed to numerous publications including TIME Magazine, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, GQ, among many others. 

In his time as a sports photographer, Mason covered a remarkable fifteen Olympic Games, three FIFA World Cups and thirty six Wimbledon Tennis Championships. He also photographed a number of Super Bowls, famous boxing matches and the 1980 USA v USSR ice hockey final at the 1980 Winter Olympics, an iconic game which came to be known as “Miracle on Ice”.

Leo Mason is an Associate member of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) and has been the holder of 18 major photographic awards.

In his later career, he developed a keen interest in photographing dance, and has captured some of the world best principle dancers and ballerinas, such as Carlos Acosta, Natalia Osipova and Tamara Rojo.
