John Bulmer: A pioneer of colour photojournalism around the world.

John Bulmer is a British photojournalist and filmmaker. Hear some of the stories behind his photographs, including his acclaimed book “The North” in the interview below.

BIOGRAPHY

John Bulmer began working for his university newspaper while studying at Cambridge before being ‘sent down’ after a set of his photographs featuring ‘The Night Climbers’ appeared in several National and International publications.

On leaving University, the Daily Express gave him some freelance work, and he soon started shooting stories for Town Magazine, which became well-known for the quality of its photography.

When the Sunday Times first began producing colour supplements in 1962, Bulmer became a prolific contributor providing them with his unique style of colour reportage. Bulmer travelled to almost 100 countries on behalf of the Sunday Times magazine.

As well as these important overseas assignments, Bulmer is well-known for his records of provincial Britain. His book "The North” is an important collection of these many visits to Northern Britain where he was one of the first photographers to document the region in colour.

In the 1970s Bulmer moved on to make documentary films for television. As a cinematographer he worked with the Director Mai Zetterling to create a film on the life of Van Gogh, before producing and directing numerous travel films and documentaries with remote tribes in the some of the most inaccessible parts of the world.
