Eileen Langsley: Pioneering photographer in the world of women’s sport.

Eileen Langsley has been photographing girls and women in sport for over forty years. She has always been passionate about helping girls to reach their potential and to increase opportunities for women in both sport and photography. She captures events such as gymnastics and figure skating in a way that celebrates their beauty and excitement as both sports and art.

BIOGRAPHY

Eileen Langsley has had a lifelong interest in sports, which lead to her training as a Physical Education teacher - a career which spanned 15 years and ignited her passion for working with girls in sport. Langsley began photographing the girls she was teaching as they took part in sports competitions across the country, which is where her photography career was born.

In 1980, she set up her own photographic agency, embarking on a career in sports photography at a time where there very few women working full time in this profession. As her career developed and she met other women working in the field, Langsley helped to set up the International Association of Women Sports Photographers in order to promote their work and support each other.

hroughout her career, Langsley has covered 13 Olympic games, 4 Commonwealth Games, as well as numerous World, European and National Championships across the globe.

Langsley’s specialist subjects include gymnastics, figure skating and olympic sports, as well as just any sport in which women and girls partake. She became renowned for these subjects, becoming the official photographer of the International Gymnastic Federation in 1983 and being awarded an honorary life membership to British Gymnastics. She also produced a number of photographic books on the subject, including ‘Gymnastics in Perspective’ and ‘Gymnastics - The Art of Sport’.
