Sefton Samuels has captured iconic images spanning five decades, on subjects including LS Lowry, Coronation Street, Louis Armstrong and the changing culture and landscape of northern England.
BIOGRAPHY
Sefton Samuels was one of Britain’s most iconic photographers.
Before turning to photography Sefton worked in mills across the North West and as a professional jazz drummer, and is known for his photojournalistic portrayal of northern England. He published a best-selling book called Northerners: Portrait of a no-nonsense people.
His career spanned more than four decades, with nearly a hundred images held in the National Portrait Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum. He had solo exhibitions at the Barbican Centre, Kings Place and Proud Gallery in central London, and was a Royal Academy of Arts competition winner. Sefton was also a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
He was described by acclaimed painter LS Lowry as being his favourite photographer. His photos hang in the homes of musical legends Paul Weller and The Stone Roses.
